Lifestyle and Technology | Changing Everyday Living

Technology has snuck into our lives like an unexpected but welcome guest, one who makes our coffee, adjusts the lights, and knows exactly what song we want to hear next. It’s no longer just a tool woven into living, working, and playing. Let’s explore how tech turns our everyday routines into something straight out of a sci-fi movie (minus the robot uprising).

Smart Homes: Where Convenience Meets Cool:

Smart homes are those homes that make your life easy and fun through smart technology. Think of it as a robot friend that does all your work. Let’s understand this concept with fun and in a simple way:

1. Magic Of Lights and Fans:

In smart homes, you can switch lights and fans on/off from your mobile. Meaning, that if you are in bed and want to switch off the lights, just press the button on the phone, and the job is done. Cool, right?

2. Work with Voice:

You can control the smart device with just your voice. For example, say “Alexa, play music” and the music will start playing. Just like using a magic wand!

3. Energy Saving Hero:

Smart homes save electricity. If you go out of a room and forget to turn off the lights, the smart system automatically turns off the lights.

4. Expert in Home Security:

Smart homes also handle the security of your home. Cameras and alarms are connected that alert you on the phone if something unusual happens. Meaning even if you are away from home, you are tension-free.

5. Temperature According to Your Mood:

The AC or heater of smart homes automatically understands whether you want cold or hot. Understand, without saying anything the environment of the house becomes perfect for you.

Smart homes not only make life easy but also give you that futuristic feeling that is there in a sci-fi movie. Just a smartphone and a few smart devices, and your house becomes a smart home.

Working Smarter, Not Harder:

Working from home used to entail moving one’s laptop from the bed to the couch. But with the advent of Zoom, Slack, and Notion, one can actually have a job, working from the kitchen table. The best part? No more traveling to work. The second best part? Working in your pajamas (although, you might want to keep a blazer close at hand for those video calls).

And this isn’t only concerned with earning a living. I have fitness trackers that tell me to move around since eight hours of continuous flexing of muscles isn’t a good thing for anybody, hand clenching toggle buttons. While other applications, like Calm, remind one of the importance of taking a break.

Example: My cousin could manage her work vastly better when she replaced her desk with a standing one, coupled with an AI application that helped her concentrate on her work. Although her cat joins her for meetings quite frequently, she has claimed that she is more productive than ever.

Your Health, Supercharged:

Do you remember the thought of counting in your head to track your steps? Today, with the availability of technology in the form of Fitbits and Apple Watches, users can easily keep track of their footsteps, heart rate, sleep patterns, and even oxygen levels. With this wearable technology, you won’t even require a health coach, instead, you can be your own personal health ambassador.

Also, with the rise of telemedicine, the entire scenario has changed. You no longer have to spend hours sitting idle in a waiting room while flicking through pages of magazines that have already gone outdated. Instead, you just have to sit on your sofa and get in contact with your doctor whenever necessary.

A humorous incident: One of my friends achieved her step goal as she was pacing around in the kitchen, waiting for the microwave to beep. Don’t you think health tech is quite motivating?

Shopping in the Digital Age:

Over the years and with the advancement of technology, the concept, of shopping has changed, and instead of asking, “Do I need to go out for this?” Some of us now ask, “How can I get this delivered in the next hour?” Just through a few tabs, you can get anything from groceries to clothing to gifts delivered to your location.

This is made possible through Augmented reality (AR), which allows you to simply take a shot of this inverted image and see whether it fits in your, for instance, living room space, while taking a glance at the sofa itself, or if those glasses fit you, this is made possible through taking virtual shots.

For instance: Last week I was planning a certain aesthetic, I used an AR app that allowed me to virtually wear a pair of sneakers. This prevented me from the hassle of returning the shoes.

Entertainment Has Leveled Up:

In the past, the center of entertainment was all the family members sitting in front of a television. Now, it’s all about the adventure to the places while seated in the comfort of your home as one uses VR games to cut across galaxies or stream numerous shows and movies that they are fond of.

Additionally, to no one’s surprise, even family game nights have been adapted to technology. What this means is that, rather than having a huge argument over a game of Monopoly, you and your sibling can now engage in an online multiplayer game that you both love even if one of you is residing on the other end of the US.

For instance, I remember having a sibling day when my brother and I spent time together in a VR setting playing an escape room game in a more virtual setting. It was amusing and chaotic at the same time and what’s fascinating is that we felt like we were both in the same place even though there was a distance of 500 miles between us.

Tech’s Quirky Side:

Of course, technology isn’t always perfect. Who hasn’t managed to trigger a smart speaker by saying something to the extent of “Hey Alexa” by mistake? Or, a copious amount of dread that sets in during the final moments of a phone with a remaining 1% battery charge?

Example: My mother wanted to call “the bakery”, through Siri, but instead reached a certain “Becky”. Of course, it was quite an amusing moment for Becky.

Conclusion:

While technology has certainly changed the way we live, it’s essential to take a moment to enjoy some time away from screens. Not every experience needs to be captured for Instagram, often, the most cherished memories happen offline.

That said, we can’t overlook how tech has made our lives easier, more connected, and, let’s face it, pretty exciting. Whether you’re asking your smart speaker to lower the lights or walking around the kitchen to reach your step goal, technology is here to stay, and it’s enhancing our everyday experiences.
